My personal guide to help new Muslims

You will find Muslims welcoming with open arms, as far as learning about Islam goes, however it can be very daunting at first with all the different sects and takes but it's like any other discipline, get to the primary document first, the Quran and work your way down, what you don't want is read the Quran with filters on :)

One needs to get into the immediate history following the death of the Prophet of God to understand the political (sect) divisions within Islam (not the "official version" :) nor the Orientalist version either) Islam is a 100% verifiable religion, anything that does not checks out is probably false, besides a handful of verses of the Quran where in-depth research is needed to understand God's message, the bulk of it is very straightforward, more importantly, the injunctions and guiding aspects are easy enough to be understood by a High School Junior :)

The problem lies in the secondary literature, a source of all divisions within Islam.
After all, is said and done, the original compilers of Hadith (secondary sources) obviously used different methodologies because the results don't sync. Once again it will be illogical to declare all were correct because of the glaring contradiction, a Quranic standard demands free of contradictions. No amount of apologetic arguments can hide this established difficulty. In fact, the apologists took a 100% verifiable religion and turned it into a dogma, putting ordinary Muslims on the defensive and forcing them to defend laws and practices that are a product of the same flawed literature.

No true Muslim can deny the authority of the Prophet of God but the injunction of obeying the messenger has obvious limitation demonstrated by the Quran, the words "obey the messenger" are invariably preceded by the words "obey God" with an emphatic "and" separating the two, not "or". The obvious limitation is, you cannot disobey God in the process of obeying the messenger. The minimum expectation is that any perceived obedience should not contradict any of God's laws in letter or spirit.

In order to truly obey the messenger, we have to resolve the issue of fabricated Hadith. The immediate question to ask will be who and why. Once the motives behind are examined, the list of the usual suspects begins to emerge. One sure method to expose them is to attack those false Hadith that has been the source of divisions and subjugation throughout the ages. The process should identify the historical personalities involved in the fabrications on one hand and point out the present day crooks on the other. My personal favorites method in order to smoke them out is to question false hadith, by them I mean the beneficiaries of the fabrications, whichever group or individual tries to defend any of the followings are/is your usual suspect (s);

Laws on stoning as the punishment. (an unbelievable farce embedded in deception)
Laws that set the age of marriage for girls to 9 years (one wonders, what could be the motive)
Laws on silence of the girl as consent (just imagine)
Laws on beards and Niqab as obligatory
Laws that force women to be accompanied by mahrams (the ball and chain with a twist)
Laws on death penalty for leaving Islam (what are they thinking)
Laws on obeying unjust rulers (perhaps most are related to this gem)
Laws on instant divorce (of course this right is exclusive for the man)
Laws that propagate abrogation of Quranic verses (an impossibility but they need this one badly to complete the deception)
Laws on declaring Muslims who oppose the above farce as Kafirs (rejectors of truth)

While researching the issues I have this to suggest, if you can't read the original Arabic then stay clear of the following English translations for various reasons and degrees of bias ;

Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali, Muhammad Muhsin Khan, commissioned by the Saudi Rulers and both the gentlemen were handsomely rewarded for towing the ruler's/clergy's line of the time.

Similarly, sites like www.islamreligion.com www.islamqa.com must be avoided, a more comprehensive list can be found here http://lifecheat.blogspot.com/p/list-of-sites-that-must-be-avoided-as.html

The Saheeh International started out it seems by taking the Muhsin Khan "Noble Qur'an," and modified and revised its translation, to come up with this new translation which was even more bracketed and with angles thus further going away from the original text. But the current efforts of the institution is worth more than a second look and using it as a serious research tool, it is still a good idea to ignore the brackets other than the purely linguistic inserts. The http://corpus.quran.com or its related site tanzil.info, both in fact are powerful tools to further your knowledge of the Quran. Always make a point of checking the word for word translation to ensure against any interpretation bias.

The following three gentlemen are guilty of religious bias, to put it mildly, Dawood, George Sale and John M Rodwell.

Be cautious with both Maulana Ali and Rashad Khalifa because of the later-day Messenger claims.

Cautious with Shakir' translation because almost nothing is known about him.
A new translation by Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar, a first by a woman is still under scrutiny but promising and so is Abdel Haleem's recent effort, even though it is limiting in its interpretation because of the heavy reliance on Fakhr al-Din al-Razi, thus giving it a dated feel. Asad's and Ahmed Ali's efforts are very Good for new Muslims. I just want to add one more promising effort that of Tarif Khalidi, professor of Islamic studies at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon.

Be very careful with all the traditional tafsirs like Ibn Kathir, they are full of glaring blunders of interpretations. Google "Ibn Kathir confession" to get a sense of what went down.

Just concentrate on the Quran to start with, tackle the issue of Ahadith (sayings of the messenger) in light of the Quran and not the other way around. Please check here to get a sense of how to avoid extreme interpretations of the Quran. Even if you don't know Arabic, it is always a good idea to research a couple of dozen Arabic words/terms that have been the target of manipulation by some Muslims and some non-Muslims alike. Words like ayat, Al-Hikma, zina, Siddiqoon, khimar, zeenatahunna, darab, zulufann etc needs looking up in more than one dictionary.

Here is another link where you can research a lot of them and then decide on which translation of the Quran you want to buy or use online.

Allow me to rant a bit more :) and repeat what I have posted elsewhere on this blog. Isn't it funny that the Majority of Muslims are caught between the Devil and the deep blue when it comes to getting to the true message of the Quran, on one hand, the Islam haters are worried sick that the current trend of educated Muslims wrestling the interpretation of the Quran away from the "mullahs" will leave them in the dust. On the other hand, the "Mullahs" masquerading as scholars are equally alarmed and are fighting tooth and nail. They are fighting not only to protect their license to subjugate ordinary God-fearing Muslims but to protect their historical bedfellows, the corrupt leadership in the guise of Kings and dictators. And no less a figure than Ghazali agrees with Ahadiths like below, imagine that!

Muslim Book 020, Number 4524:

"It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: It is obligatory for you to listen to the ruler and obey him in adversity and prosperity, in pleasure and displeasure, and even when another person is given (rather undue) preference over you."

and some more

Muslim Book 35, Number 4232:

Narrated Hudayfh Ibn al-Yaman: Prophet said: ............"There will come rulers after me who do not guide to my guidance and do not practice my Sunnah, and the hearts of some them are the hearts of Satans but they are in the body of a human." I said: "What should we do at that time?" Prophet (PBUH) said: "You should just listen to them and obey those rulers. No matter if the hurt you and take your wealth, you should follow them and obey them." ........

The presence of the above type of fabrication has forced Muslims all over the world to leverage the modern tools of data manipulation and communication to understand their religion as it was meant to be understood. They are actively researching the root meaning of Arabic words, they are applying the principles of logic and deductive reasoning, they are bringing themselves up to speed on the current scientific knowledge. As a result of all this activity, the sacred text is shining through and solidifying the faith of ordinary Muslims.

Muslims who previously used to struggle between the take of the Muslim apologist and the resulting Orientalist attacks are now amused by the twisting of words and the ever-ready brackets to add to the words of God. Some of the issues that stand corrected like stoning to death, under-aged marriages, wife beatings, dress codes, death penalties for apostates, rape evidence, divorce procedure etc and in the process defanged the Islam haters and mullahs in one stroke.

At the same time, it is hilarious to note that these two enemies of Islam, one from within and one from without having ended up supporting each other inadvertently in a strange twist of events. Both insist that the false and fabricated Ahadith literature is indispensable in understanding the religion and the primary document the Quran. Both insist on the alien concepts of abrogation and Shaan e Nazool as central to understanding the Quran and both insist on the mythical consensus of the scholars. (this last one is totally made up)

Who in their right mind would refuse to follow the instructions of how to understand the intended message of a guide, found in the guide itself, that is if the intention is to understand the message? Irrespective of the age of the guide and the set of instructions found in it. Even more baffling is the behavior which results in insisting on an interpretation which is at odds with the one arrived by following these same set of instructions.

The words of God describe it beautifully in Quran 21:18

‏21:18 بل نقذف بالحق على الباطل فيدمغه فاذا هو زاهق ولكم الويل مما تصفون
Literal: Rather We throw/hurl with the truth on the falsehood, so it nullifies/eliminates it (the falsehood), so then it(the falsehood) is vanishing/being destroyed, and for you (is) the grief/misfortune from what you describe/categorize.

Yusuf Ali: Nay, We hurl the Truth against falsehood, and it knocks out its brain, and behold, falsehood doth perish! Ah! woe be to you for the (false) things ye ascribe (to Us).

With that, I welcome you to the fold of Islam as equal and pray you to benefit fully from this most beautiful of guides.

  1. thank you so much for sharing your perspective, as someone who was not raised in Islam this discussion of various translations and issues, and your approach to the Hadiths explicitly via the Qur'an's teachings, and not the other way around, is really interesting and some of the tools you share with me here may be invaluable. I appreciate this so much, some of these questions are extremely confusing and strange to me but I've found before that the Qur'an never says anything frightening to me like that (as a young woman) - it's always so inspiring and beautiful to me, my beliefs and ideas about the world before reading are just an echo next to it as I read for the first time mash'allah. So often people seem to think in a way that does not fit it at all - for example, with women - it's so wonderful and empowering! But these contradictions are sometimes tacked on from outside - understanding about how it's not always clearly interpreted in practice, and it's worth scrutinising non-Qur'anic sources for authenticity... in your detailed, articulate analysis... I just find it so helpful and reassuring as I begin to look at questions of legit debate.

  2. Anonymous@ you are absolutely right to point out that;

    "But these contradictions are sometimes tacked on from outside"

    In fact assuming that there is "something" outside of the clear worded text of the Quran which has a certain "fixed" implied meaning results in the kind of engineered contradictions which often results in a sect. Since these "outside somethings" have different origins hence different sects is not a surprise.

    With all the talk of how Arabic words have different meanings (btw true of most languages) it is not difficult to nail down interpretations if we restrict ourselves to the context of the audible visible words of the Quran and by cross checking the use of particular words elsewhere in the Quran. The rest has to do with an individual's knowledge base. Since God is the teacher Quran 55:02 I am sure He is fully aware of our individual limitations and how best to guide us within "our individual limitations" in order to understand the whole of the message.

    Even if and when we seek guidance from others, like a self appointed TA in this context, we must never forget that the examiner ultimately grading us will be The Teacher God, irrespective of whether you are self taught and/or were taught by a TA. Here you don't have an option to blame the TA, you get it wrong, you fail.

    1. Your not a true Muslim if you believe that converts destroy religion. Go read the Quran one more time
      And I believe the term is a revert not a convert, because we were all born Muslims, even if followed another religion, and what fraud are you talking about? It seems to me you don't even know the Islamic history, and the role Abu baker played during that time, as for those you said will ruin our religion, well thats between them and Allah.
      We are all being tested in this life, they can do whatever they like, that's why those who revert save themselves, and I suggest you change your attitude, because thats not how Muslims are, you might be a fraud.

      The religion of Islam is open to all, who fear god and there punishment on judgement day

  4. I am sorry you feel that way, lucky for me only my Rab can decide if I am a Muslim or not, nobody else. As to how can you know if I am telling the truth ? easy, verification and validation. Don't take anybody's word for it, including mine. Please take out the time to explain to me and the public how I am a fraud and do provide evidence consistent with the Quranic standard. You do know what the Quranic standard of claims is ? There is no other way. May God open your heart to welcome people into our beautiful Deen.

  5. i know u are the same people who pretend to be muslim but in ur heart u r not a muslim and u only do what u want for example mock try to destroy islam and them blame religon

    what quran says

    And of mankind are some who say: We believe in Allah and the Last Day, when they believe not. (8) They think to beguile Allah and those who believe, and they beguile none save themselves; but they perceive not. (9) In their hearts is a disease, and Allah increaseth their disease. A painful doom is theirs because they lie. (10) And when it is said unto them: Make not mischief in the earth, they say: We are peacemakers only. (11) Beware ! They indeed are the mischief-makers. But they perceive not. (12) And when it is said unto them: believe as the people believe, they say: Shall we believe as the foolish believe? Beware! They indeed are the foolish? But they know not. (13) And when they fall in with those who believe, they say: We believe; but when they go apart to their devils they declare: Lo! we are with you; verily we did but mock. (14) Allah (Himself) doth mock them, leaving them to wander blindly on in their contumacy.

    means do not trust any body including who say we are muslims and not only that i have checked ur yahoo anwers u chat lot of shit all u do is twist the words of the scripture as it is said all so in the quran too
    that the people will do on earth

    for the record hadith is written by human and i do i know who made it (lets go back to the verse ; And when they fall in with those who believe, they say: We believe; but when they go apart to their devils they declare: Lo! we are with you; verily we did but mock. (14) people how wrote the hadith were imposters just like converts. and not only that quran statment is very clear the messeangers of god will only do what they are told they will not make a new ideolgy. otherwise god will not choose them and also god is very clear on one thing it says it knows the judgement day (explained in quran)how and what will happen and not only that this means that it is (1) higher power (2) know past , present , future ) so god knew who he will gave revelation to and how its (god's) messengers will do on earth. not only that another statement in quran says the messengers of god will say that (i only told them to follow quran only) MO will say this. jesus will say that (i am not god u were there and i did not say this that i was god also all of them have tell the true and god will know the true anyway) lets say on earth the messengers did different to what they were told to do, god will stop them and not only that god already knows their future

    and u belong to wahabe group

    mostly converts come from by them (in uk we have anjem choudary he chats shit about sharia law funny half of it is made up not in the quran, o wait a minute he is a wahabe done background check) what they are told and wahabes like to do that (they can not change true muslim heart)so they kill anyone

    because muslim all ways look up in quran

    we do not need converts, islam does not need converts the only reason they pretend to be converts is to destroy islam from inside

    thats the reason i said it

  9. As I previously tried to inform you I am a Muslim and patently against sects but since you refuse to go the route of reason and logic, as strictly instructed by God in the Quran dozens of times, all that is left for me is to pray for you because it is clear from your comments you are are under the influence of some one or some ideology and it is not Islam.

  13. I admit that not all hadiths are authentic but that doesn't mean to cast them all off. Hadiths are extremely imprtant, they give us more understanding of certain things in the Quran, they show us how certain things commanded in the Quran should be carried out. To follow the sunnah of prophet Muhammad is to follow the Qur'an perfectly and he was a "walking Qur'an". How can we do this without the hadith?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't want to be rude but one wonders which part of the follwing words of God on the issue of "explanation" is hard to understand;

      And the Messenger has said, "O my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Qur'an as [a thing] abandoned." (30) And thus have We made for every prophet an enemy from among the criminals. But sufficient is your Lord as a guide and a helper. (31) And those who disbelieve say, "Why was the Qur'an not revealed to him all at once?" Thus [it is] that We may strengthen thereby your heart. And We have spaced it distinctly. (32) And they do not come to you with an argument except that We bring you the truth and the BEST EXPLANATION (وَأَحْسَنَ تَفْسِيرًا). Quran 25:30-33

      And then this;
      "وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ فَصَّلْنَاهُ تَفْصِيلًا ............" Quran 17:12 Even Hilali the ultra conservative translates it as "And We have explained everything (in detail) with FULL EXPLANATION"

      So in essence they are trying to trump the FULL and BEST explanation of God. Imagine that.

      The truth is that whatever is not "explained" in the Quran is because God wants individuals to figure it out using God given faculties of reason and logic as opposed to leaving this very important issue to a cabal of scholars. The biggest advantage of reaching conclusions using the rules of logic and sound reasoning is that each individual is likely to come to the same conclusion. Once again, to rely solely on the take of the scholars, even Hadith is the take of the "scholars", The fact does not change just because they ascribe it to the Prophet Pbuh. The official prophet of God (Pbuh) had only the Quran to go on and no amount of word twisting and seriously flawed arguments will take away from this Quranic truth. Nowhere in the Quran we are asked to follow Prophet Mohammad by name. In true sence there is no mention of "follow" but the emphasis is on "obey" the messenger and what better way to obey the official messenger of God but to follow the official message of God, the Quran.

      By the way the only thing the Hadith literature does is to muddle the issue and then the "scholars" swoop in to further "explain" the explanation of God. (remember Hadith explain the Quran).

      Just so that we understand this point;

      So God has declared that He is the teacher of the Quran and that His explanation is best, detailed and full. Then the Hadith peddler claim that Hadith explains the Quran, which would mean that it explains God's explanation (please refer to the word of God above) and then the "scholars" must explain this explanation of the best and fully detailed explanation of God. Am I missing something? I don't think so if I were to accept the words of God as opposed to the words of men.

      Above all here is the question to ask ourselves, can I verify a particular Hadith? and by verification I don't mean to merely state that somebody else have done the verification. If that was good enough then any religion will do because each and every one is claimed to have been verified by their respective "scholars" to be true :)
