Is it true that if you are not a Sahaba then you are stupid?

We need to constantly raise issues that are forcing Muslims away from the message of the Quran. The often quoted sect speak "Without the hadith, you will never be able to follow the Qur'an." is a case in point. There is only one problem with this assumption. Since Quran is the primary document and if what is said were true then Quran would have mentioned it in clear worded verses. Guess what? the Quran does the opposite, it declares that Quran itself is the best Hadith :)

As far as the argument which essentially says "you are stupid because you are not a Sahaba" goes or in logical terms the propagation of originalism arguments with respect to the understanding and interpretation of the Quranic message goes, this illogical position of the traditionalist in addition to the authenticity issues needs to be challenged. It makes absolutely no sense to introduce originalism for the understanding of a Universal message because in that case the "original" understanding will rob the universality from the original message thus replacing it for all practical purposes, in essence a theological impossibility. But as we know that never stopped the "scholars" from trying :)

Hence the argument that since this Universal message was already understood by one set of people (companions) therefore another set of people with even a broader knowledge base are disqualified from understanding it is a ruse.

Needless to say not a word in the Quran to support this view unless words are made to mean two orders removed from the audible and visible words of God and their use by God in the Quran. As is evident from both history and the Quran itself one can easily deduce as to why someone will propagate this line of thinking. No Browne points for guess why  and from whom it was borrowed :)
