Is it possible to disprove Bukhari's claim in less than 15 minutes?

We are all very familiar with the catch-all "obey the messenger" call. Equally familiar is the call of those who want Muslims to "believe" in their respective sect's version of every Hadith stamped "Sahih". Whenever a Muslim gathers enough courage to challenge the clearly out of sorts reports ascribed to the Prophet of God, he or she is quickly silenced with references to the magic of deceptively coined "science of Hadith", Shaan e Nuzool or the trump card abrogation. In addition, they are made to feel small because either they don't happen to know Arabic or they are not " muhaddith" (Hadith expert), a made up qualification with no basis in the Quran the primary document. Ironically the very Quran which the Hadith is supposed to explain uses the very word Hadith in reference to the Quran itself and never once as a secondary source of Deen..

So what is an individual Muslim supposed to do when routinely pressed to either accept these reports blindly or decide to become a "muhaddith" and hope to make sense out of them. God's solution is to repeatedly remind us to use our power of observation, reason, and logic to the point that doesn't invoke a God unless you have proof Quran 23:117 and there is great wisdom in this insistence. The principles of sound reasoning and correct inference are universal. The big advantage of the rational route as opposed to the taqleedy order (the teacher is always right) is that irrespective of the material at hand, the conclusions reached are repeatable and verifiable independent of an additional specialist knowledge or "titles" earned. Even if we lack expertise in a particular domain, one can rationally test the premises upon which a particular discipline is based.

One of the most basic tools available to us is a simple time and motion study. If someone were to claim that he or she just ran around the world unaided in 24 hours one can very easily calculate and prove that it is an impossibility, given the length of distance traveled and the speed a human being can generate while running unaided. Similarly, if the "science of Hadith" is so thorough as claimed then why is it that the claims don't match the ground reality. Hence when science is applied to the claim of 600,000 Ahadith vetting in a mere 16 years period by Bukhari, the results are at best comical. Not to mention the fact that earlier another superstar Muslim disputes the authenticity of hundreds of Ahadith declared authentic by Bukhari and refuse to declare them authentic and the other way around. Where is the science in it?

But we are going to focus on the claim of the 600,000 Ghusls and the two rakat that Bukhari performed before embarking on every new Hadith evaluation. The question we are going to ask is; how do you fit 600,000 Ghusls and an equal number of Istikhara prayers into a 16 years time frame? We are not even counting the countless interviews he supposedly did with the narrators and their family and friends, not to mention the traveling. Do the math as they say, please.

Just to help with the math here are the details extracted from Bukhari's compilation for a Ghusl;

1. Start by making niyyah (intention) to perform Ghusl and cleanse thy self of impurities.
2. Wash the right hand up to and including the wrist (and between the fingers) three times, then similarly for the left hand.
3. Wash the private parts and remove dirt or filth from the body.
4. Perform Wudu.

· Reciting bismillah.
· Intention of performing wudu.
· Washing both the hands up to the wrists.
· Rinsing the inner mouth.
· Sniffing water and blowing it out
· Passing of wet fingers between the fingers of the hand and feet.
· Passing of wet fingers into the beard.
· Brushing the teeth, preferably with a miswak.
· Wudu is done systematically.
· Washing of each part one after the other without pause, so no part dries up before wudu is completed.
· Washing each limb thrice.
· Performing wudu towards the Qiblah

5. Water should be poured over the head three times so that it flows all over the body.
6. Pour water over both the shoulders three times each. Hands should be passed all over the body when water is poured so that no part of the body is left dry.
7. Move to a clean spot and wash the feet if not washed during Wudu

I don't know about you but if I were to do a thorough job I will need at least 20 minutes to get it done and when you add taking clothes off and putting them back on then perhaps 25 minutes. I guess it will vary from individual to individual but I think this would be a reasonable average. When you add to it the Istikhara.prayer itself, say another five minutes, the total bumps up to 30 minutes. So we now have a grand total of 30x600000=18000000 minutes, which translates into a shade over 34 years. Twice as much as the claim of 16 years famously associated with Bukhari. Of course if you were paying attention, let's say our estimates are off by a full 15 minutes because Bukhari happened to be a Speedy Gonzales and he managed to do, the above Ghusl with embedded Wudu, undressing, dressing and the Istikhara prayer all in a mere 15 minutes, even then he would have used up every minute of the available 16 years. Hence no time left for the Istikhara dream let alone eating, sleeping, traveling or conduct interviews.

Realistically if we were to take him up on his word, it would have taken him hundreds of years.

Mind you I kept the argument to easily verifiable numbers, I did not question the integrity of the narrators, did not analyze the matn of the reports, did not question the methodology employed because all of them can be buried by subjective calls however illogical as is done by the traditionalist. Anybody who can count can verify these numbers for themselves and they don't add up.

So the real question is what else doesn’t add up.

On the other hand if you still "believe" in Bukhari's claims then I am sure you also believe in fairy tales, the unbelievable kind ;)

Note; Some of his followers also did the math and amateurishly tried to push a new claim that he only performed the Ghusl and Istikhara for the ones that he had already vetted but then he would have lost the claimed Divine hand in rejecting the remaining 593,000 reports hence losing the premise of the claim on which this obvious falsehood is based.

  1. This is a wonderful post. I will be sharing this with everyone I know. Jazakallah khair.

A question, there's an ongoing debate about celebrating birthdays and valentines day. While I don't celebrate any of these myself, I find the opposing side to be very aggressive.

Just because something takes form in the west, does it automatically make it "haram"?
This word (haram), is carelessly tossed in every where.

What is your opinion about this matter?

    1. Salam, there is no harm in celebrating birthdays. If is is not specifically forbidden in the verses of the Quran and not perceived to be Harmful by the individual concerned then it is permitted. Everything in moderation of course :)

  2. I have been reading your posts and I wanted to ask you if we Muslims pray incorrectly. I was on youtube and I stumbled over this video...
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaTf2g3PQpA
What is your view on this? This goes against everything I have been taught. She also has another video about how pork is not forbidden. I'm really confused about this.
    Thanks in advance >.<

    1. Salam, I will try, first of all pork is Haram, there are no ifs and buts about it because it is a clear and unqualified injunction from God in a book that is 100% verifiable.

I had a look at the video, personally I think there is no need for mixing the Bible with the Quran for the simple reason that Quran is verifiable verbatim word of God and Bible originally was but currently it is not necessary to refer to it because we have the latest version of it in the form of the Quran. That said we must keep in mind that Islam is the latest chapter in the Abrahamic religions in which God confirmed the message of God previously revealed through Moses, David, Jesus and other prophets. Furthermore God decided to preserve the message of God, as detailed in the Quran and delivered through the Prophet Mohammad Pbuh, forever.

      We must meditate on these words of God;

"وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ فَصَّلْنَاهُ تَفْصِيلًا ............" Quran 17:12 Even Hilali the ultra conservative translates it as "And We have explained everything (in detail) with full explanation"

After understanding these words it is unthinkable to assume that Quran is not enough.

As far as Salat is concerned, the important thing is to just reserve a special time (s) to communicate with God, it counts more than exacting motions and chants. Basically the idea is to recite the Quran during Salat (the ritual part of the prayer) in Arabic if you know Arabic otherwise do it in a language you understand best, don't worry too much about getting it wrong as long as you begin by standing then bow and then prostrate and recite the Quran and restrict the Salat to the worship of God and his name. You are free to pray for others including the Prophets Pbut and their families but do it after finishing the Salat. Similarly feel free to ask God for anything after the Salat. With time you will be able to distill your needs and priorities.

The other important thing to keep in mind is that by leaving out the exact manner of the Salat and other rituals from the Quran, God in His infinite mercy is keeping to His promise of not putting undue burden on us. There is a wide margin within which we can offer our ritual part of Salat, after all different sects do it differently and each maintains they are right.

Equally important to point out that there is no harm in following the traditional way of offering Salat with slight modifications, just leave out any reference to Prophets during Salat. The focus must be on God Alone.

  5. I can't begin to describe how much I appreciate reading your blog. I come here at different points, when I'm sad, when I'm curious, when I'm looking for some enlightenment, when I'm looking for stimulating material, when I'm looking for an answer to a difficult question and I'm never disappointed. I read the new blog posts and then reread some of my favorite previous posts. This really has become somewhat of an oasis for me, to which I can retreat from the mayhem of the world and read some ingenious articles with a dash of sarcasm and humor. Your articles are objective, critical and most importantly they employ a simple logic that is easy to follow (something that is very refreshing when reading articles on islam!) IsA Allah will really reward you for the amazing work you've done here and what it means for people like me who are stumbling around looking for some guidance and some enlightenment.

    1. Thank you for your kind words, all I am doing is repeating the message of the Quran, I cannot take any credit for it, God in His infinite mercy just dropped it in our laps.

You are always welcome here :)

Please always verify everything for yourself, a life long habit that saved me from falsehood.

May God reserve your place in Paradise and ease your way getting there.

  6. Whenever I bring the above to the notice of the sect members, the response is it doesn't take 20 minutes :)

To which I respond; If it doesn't take twenty minutes, you are obviously not doing it right.

Besides as I mentioned even if it takes half that time, it still doesn't add up. The point is, which they obviously missed or give a miss, even if it took 1 minute, the sequence of vetting, with possible travel, interviews, analysis, Ghusl, Istikhara, going to sleep, dreaming and then interpreting of the dream and finally recording it, will take probably hundreds of years if done as claimed.

I always advise them to please ask someone who knows to explain to them how this made up notion of Istikhara "works", because it is also obvious there are gaps in their indoctrination :)

Ibrahim ibn Ma'qil said: I heard Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Bukhari say: "I was with Ishaq ibn Rahuyah when a man said: 'Why don't you compile an epitome (mukhtasar) of the prophetic ways?' This stayed with me, and was the reason why I compiled this book (the Sahih)." Al-Dhahabi said: "It has been narrated through two firm channels of transmission that al-Bukhari said: 'I extracted this book from about 600,000 (sound) hadiths, and I compiled it over sixteen years, and I made it a plea for what lies between myself and Allah.'" Al-Firabri said: Muhammad ibn Isma'il said to me: "I never included in the Sahih a hadith except I made a major ablution (ghusl) and prayed two rak'at beforehand."

Al-Nawawi said: "The scholars have agreed that the soundest of all hadith compilations are the two Sahihs of al-Bukhari and Muslim, and their vast majority have agreed that the soundest and most beneficial of the two was al-Bukhari's " He continued: "The totality of its hadiths are 7,275 with the repetitions and about 4,000 without."

In his Kitab al-Tatabbu', al-Daraqutni argues for the weakness of 78 hadiths in al-Bukhari, 100 in Muslim, and 32 in both based on isnad and matn criticism.

Al-Nawawi said: "The two Sahihs differ from all other books only in respect to the fact that what is in them is sahih and does not require investigation." Ibn al-Salah said: "Whatever only al-Bukhari or only Muslim narrates enters [also] into the category of what is definitely sahih... except a few letters which some of the expert critics objected to, such as al-Daraqutni and others - and these are known to the specialists." He said this after stating that what they agree upon is "definitely sahih" (maqtu'un bisih.h.atihi) for the Umma. Imam al-Nawawi objected to the terms "definitely sahih" while granting all that is in the Sahihayn the level of "strongly presumed [sahih] until it becomes mutawatir" (yufidu al-zanna ma lam yatawatar) as is the rule with all sahih lone-narrated (ahad) hadiths. But Ibn Kathir differed: "I am with Ibn al-Salah in his conclusion and directives, and Allah knows best." Al-Suyuti in Tadrib al-Rawi cites Ibn Kathir's words verbatim then states: "and this is also my choice and none other." This is because of the standing of the two Sahihs in the Umma and because none of the past Imams in Islam ever declared explicitly and rightly that all they had gathered in their respective books was sahih except al-Bukhari and Muslim, and the verifying experts have confirmed their claim. Al-Suyuti also states:

Shaykh al-Islam said: "What al-Nawawi mentioned in Sharh Sahih Muslim is based on the perspective of the majority (al-aktharin); as for that of the verifying authorities (al-muhaqqiqun), then no. For the verifying authorities also agree with Ibn al-Salah."

By "Shaykh al-Islam" al-Suyuti means the spotless Hafiz and immaculate Imam Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani and his book al-Nukat 'ala Ibn al-Salah. Al-Suyuti goes on to quote in detail - mostly from Hadi al-Sari - the refutations of Ibn Hajar to al-Daraqutni's criticism, showing that, in effect, the latter fails to invalidate the view of the Sahihayn as 100% sahih.

  8. Imam al Bukhari gathered over 600,000 hadith. The sahih al bukhari contains 1% of his narrations which met his stringent conditions of authenticity. He would not include anything until he did wudu and did istikharah as to whether to include a particular hadith in his book. This is why its known as the most authentic book after the Qur'an .Included in sahih al bukhari, are 7390 hadiths with repetition and 2602 without repetition.
    Total 9992 hadiths
9992 x 30minutes (want more time for gusl n istkhars take 1 hr then!)

Now dont give excuses which a child can answer.... Though the hadith was same but the speakers are many it make hadith's no more but still hadith is same

But these things are too much for ur brain ,...

And some people who dont hav GK agree with u...
    How stupid

Say shahada and have GUSL and offersalaah al-tawbah the prayer of repentance man

    1. Salam and thank you for visiting my humble blog. I am sorry that you found fault with my take of our beautiful Deen but that is exactly the point it is my take and it will be my neck on the day of reckoning. Scholars are not the custodians of the Quran or Islam, in fact Islam has absolutely no provision for allowing an individual or a group to claim ownership of Islam or approve of self appointed advocates of Islam hell-bent on hijacking it.

As to the calculation :) what can I say, if one were to count only the 1% then one will have to assume that Bukhari was right every time and the wudu and istikharah were done as a formality. If he was already right so what was the point of doing wudu and istikharah ? Or was it Ghusl and istikharah? We will never know and you know why we will never know? Because that is the nature of third party single narrations. BTW did you know that anyone who is not able to back their claim with four upright witnesses is labeled as a liar. And do you know who labels them such? The answer is God. Imagine that !!!

With all due respect, your amateurish attempt exposes poor logic. In the new format, 99% of Hadith will be excluded from the supposedly divine flavor of the process, which clearly was the plan to begin with. The resulting question begging runs into scores. The obvious one, how many false positives did he get and why is there no record or even mention of it and the other more serious issue, how many Ahadith did he miss out on which were potentially true, out of the 99% which he rejected without the aid of Istikhara. Incidentally the Talmud writers have an identical claim in place, right down to their ghusl equivalent.

Conclusion, if you go along with 600,000 Hadith claim and imagine that it was actually made by Bukhari then it is as good as Bukhari stamping himself a liar, if on the other hand you remove this claim from his works then it loses the divine guiding hand stamp which was the objective of the claim to start with, irrespective of whoever made it.

      God bless you
