Just musings.

Any fool can be trained to prevent people from doing certain actions but it takes someone special to inspire them to initiate actions. The sects by definition are good at the former because it is a powerful tool to subjugate ordinary people. The same sects have no interest in encouraging deeds unless they directly contribute towards regimentation.

Hence, it is easy to understand why the list of all that is "Haram" is a mile long and the only thing that is enforced is Salat and that too must be performed by clocking yourself into a mosque, for men of course. The use of "of course" is to point out the systematic separation of the genders, the first step towards regimentation. The dress code follows very closely. The one departure from traditional regimentation is the ingenious manner in which one gender is designated to police the other :)

  1. I've been following your posts for a long time now and I've found many of them to be insightful and interesting. I would love to see you branch out a bit beyond just addressing the issue of hadith and maybe begin exploring the Quran itself (obviously this is the critical element in our religion), its meaning, its symbolism etc. with a fresh new take on it. You could provide a platform for readers to respond with their views and insights on the meaning of the Quran. You could feature issues on how Islam ties in with issues like globalization, environmental protection, the financial crisis etc.
