The reality is that the vast majority of "their" respective members reject most of the sect-specific nonsense. People are not fools in general, they can see when they have been taken for a ride. It is one thing to go along with the "majority" under duress and another to take all this nonsense to heart.
The only unifying thread that runs through the sect scene, from an Islamic perspective, is the Quran. Ironically, whenever the Quran becomes the focus of faith for a Muslim, the sects predictably jump all over him or her. It's like declaring a primary color red as the minority but at the same time declaring the range of colors obtained from mixing it as the majority.
"Their" relevance obviously depends on paying lip service to the importance of the Devine message, the Quran, on one hand, and preferring their man-made sect-specific narrative on the other. A perfect definition of hypocrisy. We all know where the hypocrites are going to end up.
